Twists and Turns

I have friends that graduated with me over 50 years ago who lived an utterly straight life. I’m not talking about sexual orientation. I’m referring to the direction and path of their lives. They graduated from high school, worked in the same steel mill where their fathers worked, clocked in and out for 30 years, retired, went fishing, sat down and died.

There was never an unexpected day in their predictable lives. Routine ruled their existence and they believed they lived the best life possible. Those that are still alive occasionally post on social media. It’s quite dull, really. Their most exciting posts are what they’re having for dinner.

I suppose it’s mildly satisfying for those who know no other kind of life. I personally cannot relate. I guess most of the men and women in the Bible couldn’t either. Their lives were anything but boring…anything but predictable. Abraham, Moses, Esther, Ruth, David and Jonah all lived their lives knowing that twists and turns were the order of the day. God moved Abraham to different locations all over the Mideast. Moses was sent from the backside of the desert to the palace, where he was to challenge the most powerful ruler on earth. Esther was transformed from an alien to queen, Ruth from a pauper to the family tree of the Messiah, David from shepherd to King and Jonah from fish bait to a missionary.

The life of those surrendered to the calling of God can expect the unexpected. If there is anything predictable about the life of a servant of God, it is that their lives are unpredictable. But in the middle of all the unexpected change, one truth brings great peace. That is the fact that although we may be surprised, God is not. He knew each twist and every turn that would happen in the lives of the biblical heroes and heroines. And He also knows every detour, pothole and speed bump in your life. Not only does He know, but He orchestrates your life and orders your steps to intersect each one. Why? Because He knows that you will only end up where you are supposed to be by maneuvering through the twists and turns. Just like Abraham, Ruth, David and all the rest.

So, when you are tempted to long for a dull, predictable and easy-going life…don’t. Resolve to take the bumpy road that leads to your very best life!
