Evangelism, soul-winning, and witnessing are such scary terms for most of us. Lots of us were trained in various ways to “lead someone to Christ.” We memorized Scriptures, learned how to draw diagrams and even practiced with other believers! Most Evangelical Christians are trained way beyond their willingness to actually share the gospel with the lost.
Why is that? There are probably lots of reasons but here’s one that doesn’t get talked about much. Most Christians equate witnessing with being a salesperson for God. And the truth is, most people don’t want to be salespeople. For many years, I was in sales management and hired lots of people. I trained them, let them listen as I dealt with customers, and gave them great incentives. Sadly, most of them failed. Why? Because they weren’t comfortable selling.
If you see witnessing as sales, you probably just won’t do it. Even if you do, you’ll be so uncomfortable that others may find you less than convincing. I have good news! Witnessing is not sales. You’re not selling God, Jesus, or salvation. We were never called to be pushy salespeople. Use the acrostic A-R-M to remember what we were called to be:
· Ambassadors…As we go, we go on God’s behalf. We are the visible representative of an invisible God. We should say what He would say and do what He would do. Think Jesus. He was the visible form of His Father.
· Responder…When people are hurt, sick, facing danger or are injured, they call First Responders. Being good evangelists means we are always on call, ready to respond to the needs of others. Again, think Jesus. He responded to those around Him who were hurting, damaged by life and emotionally needy. So should we. Showing the love of Jesus to others is one of the most powerful ways to share the good news.
· Mirror…If we are in relationship with God, we should be accurately reflecting Him to the world. In other words, when they see us, they should see Jesus. It’s always fun to watch a cat or dog look in a mirror. They can’t tell the difference between a reflection and the real thing. When others see us, they shouldn’t be able to tell much difference between us and Jesus. After all, they were first called Christians (“little Jesus”) because they looked so much like Him.
