We often find comfort in Apostle Paul’s words: “Press on toward the mark of the high calling in Christ Jesus.” It’s a reminder to stay the course, especially when we feel weary or discouraged. Perseverance is a virtue many of us struggle to uphold, especially in moments of stress, exhaustion, or as we grow older. The temptation to quit can feel so strong, but we’re not alone in facing this challenge.
I remember an old hymn we used to sing, and its words still resonate today:
I’m pressing on the upward way,
New heights I’m gaining every day;
Still praying as I onward bound,
Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.
But if I’m being honest, there are days when I just want to sit down, take a break, and wait for Jesus to return. Some days, scaling new heights feels less important than simply holding onto the ground I’ve already gained.
Life’s struggles—disappointments with the church, people, or our own failures—can make it easy to consider giving up. The challenges we face may cloud our vision, and quitting can start to seem like the best option. But we need to remember: perseverance matters, even when it’s hard.
Sometimes You Need Help to Press On
In my marriage, my wife and I are quite different, yet she’s a constant source of strength. Jane’s motto is “Quitting is not an option.” She’s a realist, and that mindset has helped her navigate life’s ups and downs. While I tend to be the optimist, my idealism sometimes leaves me disappointed. Jane, on the other hand, always prepares for the difficult moments, and when they come, she presses on, undeterred.
I’m incredibly grateful to have someone like her by my side. For over 50 years, she has been there, sticking with me through thick and thin. When I’ve felt like giving up, she’s reminded me to keep going, and her unwavering support has made all the difference.
Do you have someone like that in your life? Someone who helps you stay strong when you’re ready to quit? Someone who lifts you up when you’re weary, whether it’s in spirit or physically? If not, I encourage you to find that person. There’s strength in having spiritual partners—people who complement your weaknesses with their own strengths.
She Almost Failed…But Then Decided to Press On
I was reminded of the power of encouragement while watching a program about a woman who dreamed of hiking to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back up. She and her husband set out on this ambitious journey together, but at one point, she was ready to quit. Her husband, ever supportive, reminded her of her dream and encouraged her to keep going. She took a moment to gather herself and then, with his help, finished the hike. Without him by her side, she might have regretted giving up, but instead, she finished strong.
So, don’t quit. I know the road can be tough, and I know it can feel like the weight of everything is just too much to bear. But the regret of giving up is far heavier than any struggle we face. God promises to walk with us through every hardship, and He places people in our lives to encourage and uplift us.
Make the decision today to press on. You’re not alone, and you can do this.
