What’s Wrong With It?

by | May 5, 2024 | Decision Making

If you find yourself pondering this question, chances are, the answer is already within your grasp. Why? Because the question itself may be misguided. A profound insight from one of my mentors during my doctoral studies resonates deeply: “Wisdom arises from posing the right questions.” This suggests that our pursuit of answers often falters due to asking the wrong questions.

So, if “What’s wrong with it?” proves to be the incorrect question, what is the appropriate one? Herein lies the crux: “What’s right with it?” As Christians, we are urged to fix our minds on “whatever is true, whatever is dignified, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable— if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, contemplate these things.” (Philippians 4:8 LSB)

I contend that a more pertinent and fitting question for the Christian is this: “Is there any redemptive value in it?” By scrutinizing through the lens of “What’s wrong with it?” a myriad of questionable elements can infiltrate our lives. Conversely, when we adopt the filter of “What’s right with it?” commendable aspects, though not necessarily optimal, may become prominent influencers in our lives. Our objective should be to immerse ourselves solely in endeavors, interactions, and content that foster spiritual redemption.

Try this experiment. When you analyze the lyrics to the music you listen to, ask yourself if the lyrics are building up your faith, drawing you closer to Jesus, or taking your mind and emotions to spiritually unhealthy places. Here’s another one: Do your entertainment choices (movies, books, places you socialize) feed your Spirit or simply your body, emotions, and desires?

I am firmly convinced that a significant segment of this generation is at risk of spiritual erosion due to the Church’s failure to assertively advocate for discerning consumption. This isn’t about prudishness or being old-fashioned. It’s about electing purity and righteousness over moral decay and overt defiance against God.

Consider asking the right question: “Is this activity, entertainment, or relationship redemptive in my life?” If not, drop it, turn around, and run in the opposite direction.
